According to DSM-5 criteria, a learning disability is defined as difficulty learning and using academic skills. At Sharon Blott Psychological Services, we offer psychological assessment for children and teens struggling with a learning disability. Sharon Blott is available to help your child with learning disability assessment in Calgary, Okotoks and the surrounding area.
Learning disability is indicated by the presence of at least one of the following symptoms that have persisted for at least six months, despite the provision of interventions that target those difficulties:
Inaccurate or slow and effortful word reading (decoding), including dyslexia
Difficulty with spelling
Difficulty understanding the meaning of what is read (reading comprehension)
Difficulty mastering number sense, number facts, calculation, or math reasoning including dyscalculia
Difficulty with written expression including dysgraphia
Here are some common learning disabilities that children suffer from:
Dyslexia Dyslexia is an alternative term used to refer to a pattern of learning difficulties characterized by problems with accurate or fluent word recognition, poor decoding, and poor spelling abilities.
Dyscalculia Dyscalculia is an alternative term used to refer to a pattern of difficulties characterized by problems processing numerical information, learning arithmetic facts, and performing accurate or fluent calculations.
Sharon completes comprehensive learning disability assessments at a flat rate of $2,200.00.
A typical assessment involves an initial intake appointment in which we cover background information, plan the assessment process, and obtain consent. Subsequent appointments include taking an intelligence test, achievement test, measures of memory, attention, executive functioning, and adaptive functioning.
A thorough report is provided within two to three weeks of completion of testing, with results discussed at a final feedback meeting.
